The Demi-Monde / Media Installation by Richard Kerr

29 August 2022 | 9:00 pm - 30 August 2022 | 2:00 am

FREE OUTDOOR PROJECTION / The Demi-Monde will screen nightly during the Mighty Niagara Film Fest festival (24-27 August) beginning at sunset at the old Town Cinema, 280 St Paul St, downtown St. Catharines.

The Mighty Niagara Film Fest proudly presents The Demi-Monde (2015) by Richard Kerr. An important figure in the history of Canadian experimental cinema, Kerr ( b. 1952 St. Catharines) has produced a body of work spanning over thirty years of image-based media, including analog film and digital video which have been screened at festivals, and collected by museums and galleries around the world.

Though celluloid has consistently been integral to his practice, its employment has ranged over the years, from being intermittently projected on-screen to statically mounted against backlit lightboxes. The shifting applications of film in Kerr’s work track the material’s declining value in the motion picture industry. The Demi-Monde is a silent, digitized celluloid collage of entrancing slow-dissolve of Hollywood footage.

The Ground Zero: Homecoming of Richard Kerr film series continues with two special event screenings in this year’s festival program; Part One in focus on Kerr‘s early works Canal (1981), and The Last Days of Contrition (1988) screening Fri 26 Aug 7PM at the RiverBrink Art Museum, followed by Part Two with his most recent film Field Trip (2022) including the filmmaker in attendance for a post-screening Q+A hosted by Anthony Kinik on Sat 27 Aug 3PM at The Film House at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre.
