After the demise of the creator of Afrobeat, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, in August 1997, many people wondered what would become of his empire, ‘Kalakuta Republic’, located in Ikeja, Lagos-State, Nigeria. A controversial commune interpreted in different ways by different people and visited by people from all around the world. Twenty years after Fela, Kalakuta is still standing.
What is the meaning of Kalakuta? Why did Fela declare a ‘republic’ within a republic? What are the experiences of the ‘citizens’ of Kalakuta Republic? What is the future of Kalakuta? As Fela would say, “It is time to investigate.”
