The Niagara Artists Centre is pleased to present Nature’s Wild (Duets), a new show of work by scholar Andil Gosine and several collaborators. Fresh off his acclaimed curatorial project everything slackens in a wreck, which recently closed its run at the Ford Foundation Gallery in New York, Gosine will share works by an international group of artists engaged with the central themes of his 2021 book, Nature’s Wild: Love, Sex and Law in the Caribbean (Duke University Press, 2021).
Nature’s takes as its central concern anxieties about the line between human and non-human animals, and their management through the discipling of sex. Artists duet with Gosine, or with each other and pairings in the exhibition include:
- The premiere presentation of New York-based surrealist Sur Rodney (Sur)’s “Nipple Museum” – a three-decades long project of “nipple sculptures” about his fetish, alongside a projection of the video Bathwater: A Sur (Rodney Sur) Story, made by Gosine, and Toronot-based artist Joshua Vettivelu’s etched glass sculptures made from white supremacist gay porn;
- A selection of fifty watercolor works by London-based artist Angie Quick, made in response to Gosine’s text; (Quick will be performing her “Psychic Watercolors”
project at the exhibition’s opening on September 9); - Sculptural works by Persian ceramicist Aitak Sorahitalab Guadeloupean painter Kelly Sinnapah Mary and Swedish-Italian duo nous atelier.
- And rounding off the set are two sets of prints by Gosine, including his first new work in three years, Les trois homme de Paris.
The exhibition opens on Friday 9 September and runs until Saturday 5 November 2022.
Programming for the show will include a September 15 conversation between Lauren Corman and Gosine, and the issue of a “First Reader” essay catalog.
