The General
USA, 1926. Directed by Clyde Bruckman and Buster Keaton. 78 min. NR
Presented in partnership with The Gallery Players of Niagara
Introduction by film programmer Joan Nicks
Live improvised score performed by the Gallery Players of Niagara
Rejected by the Confederate army and taken for a coward by his beloved Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), young Johnny Gray (Keaton) is given a chance to redeem himself when Yankee spies steal his cherished locomotive. Johnny wages a one-man war against hijackers, an errant cannon and the unpredictable hand of fate while roaring along the iron rails.
Consistently ranked among the greatest films ever made, Buster Keaton’s The General is so brilliantly conceived and executed that it continues to inspire awe and laughter with every viewing.
“A sublime comedy, The General is also a Civil War tintype brought to stately life.”
– Tim Purtell, Entertainment Weekly
THE GALLERY PLAYERS OF NIAGARA
The Gallery Players of Niagara’s mission is to enrich our world through intimate and diverse presentations of chamber music, created to illuminate the art, enlighten our audiences, and share the sheer joy of music making.
The Gallery Players of Niagara began presenting concerts in 1994 and has since become one of Niagara’s most prominent presenters of classical chamber music. Each season we present a vast array of chamber music, from Vivaldi to Brahms to folk-inspired music to improvised music for silent movies. We commission and perform new Canadian works, present baroque repertoire on period instruments, and cover all the standard chamber music repertoire in between!
