MEMORIAL ART FUND 2016
Travel Assistance for Professional Visual, Media, and Craft Artists
Applications due: Fri 30 Sept at 5PM
Details and application available here

Regan Peacock Fung took tremendous joy in the world around her. Her courageous spirit, keen judgment and infectious laughter enriched the lives of those who knew her. Regan’s passing in September 2011, from Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia, was a devastating loss.

The Regan Peacock Fung Memorial Fund has been established by Regan’s parents, Bob and Claudia, and brother, Erik, to honour her memory and two of the passions that enriched her life: art and travel. Money raised through the fund will provide assistance to professional visual, media and craft artists living in Niagara. Annually, an artist will be awarded $1000 toward their travel expenses artist in Canada or abroad to attend, or participate in, activities related to their work as an artist.

Ontario Arts Council
Exhibition Assistance Programme
Deadline for applications is Friday 30 September 2016

What is the Exhibition Assistance program?
The Exhibition Assistance program provides grants of $500 to $1,500 to assist individual artists with costs related to presenting their work in confirmed, upcoming exhibitions. Artists apply to third-party recommender organizations located throughout the province. The recommenders are public galleries, artist-run centres and other visual and media arts organizations that administer the Exhibition Assistance program and make grant recommendations to the Ontario Arts Council (OAC).

The program aims to reflect the range of artistic practices in the visual arts, media arts and craft communities and to support excellence, regional activity, linguistic and cultural diversity and Aboriginal and Franco-Ontarian identity.

The STRUTT Wearable Art Show is officially taillights. The WS Tyler Factory, our home for the last four years, is no longer available to us. It’s a factory again and believe it or not now has a higher purpose to serve than hosting an annual wearable art weekend. Thankfully, we’ve found a new home at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre and we’re putting together something fresh! TheVoix de Ville Extravagonzo will take place in Partridge Hall on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 of November.

What is Voix de Ville?
Unlike STRUTT, The Voix de Ville Extravagono is based on the model of the vaudeville show, a staged spectacle with one astonishing performance followed by another (think The Muppet Show). Voix de Ville has journeyed from the past and/or some kind of nether or alien world for a visit. We’ve programmed some astounding acts to surprise and delight audiences: comedians, acrobats, dancers, and aerialists.

The Wearable Art
So where does wearable art fit in? With STRUTT, our show was built around the wearable art submitted by artists. Voix de Ville is an equal mix of wearable art, music, dance, and sensational performances. Once again, we’re asking artists to submit their ideas for transforming the human body. We also want artists to consider a film made in 1902 by Georges Méliès called Voyage Dans La Lune (you can see it on YouTube and there’s a great hand coloured version on Vimeo). If you can riff on that, great. If you’ve got some other ideas for wearable art that you’d like to create, also cool. Send us your concept(s) drawings so we can give it a green light.

On Stage and Off Stage
We have been challenged with transforming the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre into a crazy carnival, that includes the lobby, Partridge Hall, and Robertson Theatre. We’re looking to bring the WTF to the audience from the moment they walk in the door. Give us stuff for the stage and/or for all over!

Outrageous wearable imaginings
Sublime electro-sonic exploits

Sensational visual tableaus of ‘Je-ne-know-what-the-heck?’
Formidably phunny farceurs!

The Voix de Ville Extravagonzo has evolved out of the Niagara Artists Centre’s popular STRUTT Wearable Art Show, a long-running Niagara favourite. Voix de Ville is a show based on the storied traditions of vaudeville. It is an unrivalled mixture of extraordinary performative feats presented in equally exuberant proportions.

A cavalcade of talent has been invited to amaze and astonish audiences in novel ways. Ringmaster of Ceremonies Bruce McCulloch—everyone’s favourite Kid in the Hall—will orchestrate the riot of WTFery from centre stage. Canada’s representative at the 55th Venice Biennale, Shary Boyle will transform Partridge Hall with beguiling projections and an exhilarating set design. On stage, the action of dancers and acrobats dressed in one-of-a-kind wearable art creations from the bizarre to the sublime will be propelled by a reconstituted Shadowy Men on Shadowy Planet, often called the Best Canadian Instrumental Band of All Time. The show is directed by Suitcase in Point’s Artistic Director Deanna Jones.

Join us at the PAC for Niagara’s cultural party of the year!

In the Soil Arts Festival is now accepting applications for the 9th annual multidisciplinary arts festival set to take over downtown St. Catharines from 28-30 April 2017.

Artists of all levels of experience are invited to apply. This year, In the Soil will present 150+ dance, film, media, music, theatre and interdisciplinary works over the 3-day festival. We are seeking out new artistic work and out-of-the-box ideas. We want you to dream big with us as we create a happening in downtown St. Catharines like no other.

Applications are due by Friday 4 November 2016 @ 11:59pm.

Celebrating its 9th year, In the Soil Arts Festival brings new and unique art experiences to audiences with an original program of live theatre, poetry, music, dance, media and special streetscape and interactive art throughout the St. Catharines downtown core. Last year over 500 artists and 5000 festival patrons came together to celebrate the arts of Niagara and beyond. This year, we continue in our aim to contribute to a Niagara that is self-determining and culturally distinct.

Downtown St. Catharines is in the midst of a renaissance with the completion of new dedicated facilities for the performing arts. The festival has already begun developing plans with Brock’s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts and the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre and looks forward to exploring these state of the art buildings for the 2016 edition.

In the Soil Arts Festival is proudly brought to you by Suitcase in Point Theatre Company, and is steered by a committee with partners at Niagara Artists Centre, Greenbelt Arts and WOW! Recording Studio & Creative Music Space.
