Get stoked! GBRS is celebrating our season finale with an amazing lineup of poets. We’ve had another great year, and we’re excited to end it in style.
Come on out for an evening of poetry readings by the finest Canada has to offer. We are in rare form, featuring poets from Vancouver, Burlington, Toronto, and Ottawa. We will be featuring:
lindsay cahill is a Toronto-based editor, visual poet, and remixer. her work has been widely published across Canada, and internationally in the U.S. and Australia, most recently in The Rusty Toque, Stroboscope: a magazine of versioned poetics, and TheVolta.org’s feature on The Women of Visual Poetry. pieces from her Simpsons remix project will be featured in Jonathan Ball’s forthcoming anthology WHY POETRY SUCKS. she currently co-edits the Toronto and NYC based mag outlandish with Kelly Wydryk.
Suzannah Showler‘s writing has appeared places, including The Walrus, Hazlitt, The Puritan, and Joyland. She was a finalist for the 2013 RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers from the Writers’ Trust of Canada, and winner of the 2012 Matrix LitPOP Award for Poetry. Her first collection of poetry, Failure to Thrive, was released spring 2014 from ECW Press.
Andy Weaver is the author of Were the Bees (NeWest 2005), and Gangson (NeWest 2011). His poems have been published in Prism, the New American Writing, Descant, Contemporary Verse 2, dandelion, filling station, among others. Were the Bees was nominated for the Stephan G. Stephansson Award for poetry. He was the co-founder and editor of QWERTY magazine, and served on the editorial board for The Fiddlehead. He is employed as an Associate Professor at York University. In 2005, and 2000, he acted as a juror for the the Alberta Foundation of the Arts. He lives in Burlington, Ontario.
Catherine Owen has been publishing and performing her poetry across Canada and other places in the world since 1993. She has appeared in literary magazines, festivals, cafés, bars, colleges, high schools and retirement homes. Along with ten books of poetry, Catherine also sees her work in anthologies, has degrees, is translated, writes essays and plays bass in her own metal band, Inhuman.
Kevin Spenst‘s poetry has appeared in Prairie Fire, Contemporary Verse 2, Rhubarb Magazine, Capilano Review, dANDelion, filling Station, Poetry is Dead, Moonshot Magazine, The Maynard, illiterature, The Enpipe Line, V6A and Ditch Poetry. His poetry has been shortlisted for the Robert Kroetsch Award for Innovative Poetry and his manuscript, Ignite, has come in as a finalist for the Alfred G. Baily Prize. In 2011, he won the Lush Triumphant Award for Poetry for a suite of poems from Ignite. Spenst is in the middle of a cross Canada tour to promote small presses.
Sandra Ridley’s first full-length collection of poetry, Fallout, won the 2010 Saskatchewan Book Award for publishing, the Alfred G. Bailey prize, and was a finalist for the Ottawa Book Award. Her second book, Post-Apothecary, was short-listed for the 2012 ReLit and Archibald Lampman Awards. Also in 2012, Ridley won the international festival Of Authors’ Battle of the Bards and was featured in The University of Toronto’s Influency Salon. Twice a finalist for the Robert Kroetsch Award for innovative poetry, Ridley is the author of two chapbooks, Rest Cure – and Lift, for which she was co-recipient of the bpNichol Chapbook Award.

Crewzine is Canada’s Own Skateboard Newspaper. Celebrating the release of Crewzine’s third issue, this event will be a multimedia mashup event. The event will be a newspaper release party, a video premier, an art show, & a photo show, all in one. The Art & Photo shows will be put on by the same people involved with the Newspaper. Jeffery Coopman from St.Catharines & Niagara Fall’s own, Trevor Rivard will have their new age, tatoo, skateboarding, hardcore inspired art on display. Also, Lee Superka and Mike Graveline’s Photography will be on display, feature photography from their past year’s travels around North America.

The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre is pleased to announce that the second season of the aMUSE event series will begin on Saturday 24 May at Mahtay Café and Lounge.
There will be four installments of aMUSE in 2014. The second event is scheduled for 21 June, while the third and fourth events will take place on 1 and 29 November, all at Mahtay. The pop-up exhibits will feature artifacts collected by the Museum during a specific time period, hence this year’s theme: collected.
Artifacts collected by the Museum in the 1970’s will be on display at the May 24 event, while items collected in the 1980’s and 1990’s will be the focus of the June 21 and November 1 events. Objects collected by the Museum in the 21st century will be on display at the final event on November 29. Each exhibit will also include photographs of happenings in the City drawn from the St. Catharines Standard Collection.
“Our pop-up exhibits are a new, innovative way to see and interact with the St. Catharines Museum’s collection” says Kathleen Powell, Curator and Supervisor of Historical Services for the City of St. Catharines. “The new, social museum experience is another way of connecting the public with the resources that the museum houses and protects.”
The 2014 season of aMUSE also features musical performances by local artists. Our superb line-up features Fox Trail (24 May), Aaron Berger and the Blue Stars (21 June), Whiney Pea (1 November) and Brittany Brooks (29 November). Anchoring the music for our entire series this year is the quintessentially cool DJ Marinko, who will be spinning at every event.

aMUSE is a new and innovative, one night only, pop-up museum experience
presented by the St. Catharines Museum & Welland Canals Centre. aMUSE brings items from the collection out into a social atmosphere where the public can view, discuss, interact and share their stories about the items in the museum’s collection.

On Wednesday 14 May 2014 CARFAC will be heading to the Supreme Court of Canada for a final “dance” with the National Gallery. For the last 11 years, the organizations that represent visual artists, CARFAC & RAAV, have been trying to negotiate standards for the payment of artists at the National Gallery that would be binding – similar to a minimum wage. We are still short of our goal of raising $50,000 to cover all legal costs connected to the case. The event at Cube Gallery will also offer a chance for the community to purchase items such as t-shirts, stickers and buttons that make reference to CARFAC’s important advocacy work. For those individuals that are unable to attend the event but want to share in the moment, you are able to purchase items
