Tell us a bit about yourself:

I am a Dora Nominated Actor, writer and performer of Nigerian descent who lives and works in Ontario. Previous acting credits include Puck in Shakespeare in Action’s adaptation of “ A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, Memory in Theatre Directs “Binti’s Journey”*, Gigi in New Harlem’s production, “Gas girls”*, Beka in Volcano Theatre’s Africa Trilogy “ Shine your Eye”* Luminato, June 2010 reprising her role as Beka in a Canstage/ Volcano theatre’s production of “Another Africa ” Canstage 2011 and Harriet Tubman in “The Power Of Harriet T ” YPT 2013. Friend of Jean in “Steadfast: The Messenger and the Message” a film by Fahim Hamid Ali. Sodienye holds a master’s degree in Theatre and Performance studies from York University with a keen interest in progressive African Theories and their development.

What inspires you?

God, art, fashion, style, my children, my heritage, my father, and being an African woman.

Tell us the story behind how you got into your craft?

I danced Ballet for 12 years and then my dad got very sick and I lost a year. I simply diversified my mode of performance. I’m an Artist.

What drew you to participating in this specific piece of work?

I was Invited to perform in this film, previously and ignorantly I had no idea of the importance of this story or this woman Jean Augustine. I certainly didn’t learn about her in History class or Government class in my Canadian highschool, it’s evident we need a better curriculum, one that is at least reflective of the socio-cultural landscape.

What do you love most about MNFF?

It’s local, it’s inspired and it’s showcasing work of great importance whilst being fun and a good time.

What does 2023 hold for you?

This year, I will continue my academic pursuits at York University as I study towards a PhD in Theatre Dance and Performance Studies. Also, many, many great outfits and reflections on my personal style, travel, love…..it’s going to be a great rest of the year, God willing.

Jean Augustine is a Canadian icon whose legacy has made a lasting impact on society. In the highly anticipated documentary film “Steadfast – The Messenger and the Message” directed by Fahim Hamid Ali, you will witness the unwavering determination of a trailblazing federal level politician, social activist, and educator.

Through captivating enactments and firsthand accounts, the film captures Dr. Augustine’s journey from her humble beginnings in Grenada, West Indies, to her numerous achievements and accolades after immigrating to Canada in 1960. Her life is a testament to the power of perseverance, courage, and the unwavering commitment to fighting for the rights of women, African-Canadians, and the socially disadvantaged.
