Before ‘happenstance vérité’ was popularized by “How To with John Wilson” there was See-Moto-Magic, Raymond Schembri’s YouTube channel chronicling day-to-day life in St. Catharines over two decades. Beginning inside the Canada Hair Cloth building where looms whir away and radiating all the way out to clouds of buzzing insects on the Pt. Dalhousie pier, Raymond has documented everything from buildings being demolished and erected to the best toasted western sandwich in town. Like a modern Canterbury Tales, the pilgrims Raymond meets along the way tell their own stories: street musicians, construction workers, merchants and cooks, and people with their pets. The See-Moto-Magic Collective, a loosely organized group of NAC members and admirers of Raymond’s videos, compiled their favourite short films from the hundreds that he’s posted online. See-Moto-Magic is the most authentic and entertaining street-level view of St. Catharines that’s likely to exist, and an extraordinary chance to rediscover our city.

Raymond Schembri is a videographer, retired Canada Hair Cloth loom operator, whirly-gig builder, and sewer grate fisherman. He lives in downtown St. Catharines.
