SOME KIND OF HEAVEN
USA, 2021. Directed by Lance Oppenheim. 83 min. 14A
Some Kind of Heaven explores life inside the palm-tree-lined streets of The Villages, Florida’s largest retirement community, a planned city that is home to over 130,000 seniors. Residents are offered a utopian version of the American yesteryear: wide, safe streets, perfectly manicured lawns, and countless activities all in service of enjoying their golden years. Even the ‘news’ comes from a Villages-only television station and newspaper. A front-page story might be about a resident’s new red sports car. “I don’t see slums. I don’t see death and destruction,” a resident says with relief. Like a perpetual luxury cruise ship, The Villages have everything the community could ever want or need within its gates. A mutual curiosity between the residents and this young filmmaker gives Some Kind of Heaven a vivifying spirit and transforms what might have been familiarly charming and smirkily knowing into something more troubling, elusive, and enduring.
“Some Kind Of Heaven is a surreal, visually sublime slice of life that offers escapism and subverts it in the same breath, an enduring portrait of a particular subculture the likes of which I haven’t seen probably since Wildwood, NJ. I spent virtually the entire 83 minutes laughing, slapping my forehead, or both.” -Vince Mancini, Uproxx
